['ækrən], Stadt in Nordostohio, USA, 223 600 Einwohner; Universität (gegründet 1870).
 
 
Akron entwickelte sich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zum Zentrum der amerikanischen Gummiindustrie; die größten Firmen haben hier ihre Hauptwerke (etwa 1/3 der US-Produktion an Autoreifen und sonstigen Gummiwaren). Im Zweiten Weltkrieg zog Akron als Reservoir von Arbeitskräften aus dem Alleghenyplateau neue Industrien an (Kunstkautschuk, Maschinenbau, Metallverarbeitung). Durch Krisen in der Autoindustrie und Abbau von Arbeitsplätzen verringerte sich die Bevölkerungszahl zwischen 1970 und 1990 um rd. 20 %.
